District Advocacy Director Job Description

Background on A+ Denver

The mission of A+ Denver (A+) is to harness the power of civic leadership to build public will and advocate for the changes necessary to dramatically increase student achievement in public education in Colorado.  Our board and members include over 100 community leaders across the public, nonprofit, university, and business sectors. A+ Denver is a growing advocacy, policy and research non-profit looking for a new member our team who is excited about building relationships with other metro area school districts.

District Advocacy Director

A+ is seeking an individual excited about improving outcomes for Aurora Public School students to fill the role of District Advocacy Director. This person will need to be able to lead and manage meetings with key stakeholders from the community and manage a variety of projects simultaneously, maintain important relationships, and be the voice of A+ in the Aurora community. This role will also support A+ staff with the execution of other related organizational activities including development, advocacy campaigns, research papers, and events.

A successful candidate will be someone who is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish a goal, someone who is able to anticipate problems and opportunities without a great deal of supervision, and someone with a strong connection with the mission of the organization.   

Responsibilities:

  • Build a network of community advocates, business leaders, school board members, and district staff committed to driving actions important to the improvement of Aurora Public Schools;

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key school district staff to build a long-term, collaborative partnership for change;

  • Play a significant role in long-term strategic planning for district work, in collaboration with A+ staff and board of directions, monitor and report on implementation of plan;

  • Establish A+ as a thought-leader and thought-partner for district improvement strategies;

  • Provide regular in-person and written updates both formally and informally to keep all strategic partners and key stakeholders informed of activities and progress.  


Other Responsibilities  

Depending on the background of the candidate, other responsibilities might include:

  • Assisting with internal and external communication (website, social media, newsletters), report editing and publication, project management, and event planning

  • Contributing to grant applications and reporting

  • Collecting and/or analyzing data to help drive decision-making



Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree (preferred);

  • 3 years professional experience;

  • Mission-driven and passionate about building a network of advocates for improving schools in Aurora;

  • Ideally experience teaching or working in public education, but not required;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with diverse groups of people and organizations as evidenced by experience working across sectors;

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present data to drive decision-making;

  • Bilingual Spanish strongly preferred;

  • Ability to travel frequently in the Metro Denver area;

  • Proficiency in Excel or other analysis software;

  • Some web design and/or editing experience;

  • Familiarity with Aurora-based communities and organizations preferred.
