A+ Reports
Criteria to Use in Considering School Closure
As part of its first phase of work, A+ Denver developed principles and criteria for the district and the Denver Public School Board to use in making crucial decisions on closure and realignment issues across the district. The report was prepared by the Facilities and Finance committee, a subcommittee of A+ Denver, at the request of the Denver Public School Superintendent and Denver Public School Board. It attempts to create fair and comprehensive standards and considerations by which the district can evaluate its facilities to determine which should be redesigned, reconstituted or closed.
Report on ProComp
In May and June of 2008, the A+ Denver Finance & Facilities Subcommittee reviewed questions concerning ProComp, specifically how the program is currently being implemented and whether changes are warranted. The committee received presentations from the DCTA and DPS and reviewed ProComp materials, including ballot language, the ProComp Agreement and the ProComp Handbook. In a report released in August, 2008 the committee concluded that ProComp falls short of being fully or effectively put to use and changes must be made to align the program with its initial intent of being a "results-based" system with the ultimate objective of improving student achievement. DPS: Reform, Challenges and the Future
The report, titled, Denver’s Public Schools: Reforms, Challenges and the Future,
was released June 15. It is a first of its kind analysis, offering a
comprehensive look at how well DPS is performing in educating its
students. The three community groups joined forces to produce the
report because of a shared concern that unless the public can
understand the true state of its public schools, it will be difficult
to build the public will for the dramatic reform needed to improve
student outcomes.
In releasing the report, A+ Board Chairman Federico Peña stated, “Our
community faces a crisis and the people of this city need to know
that.” He added, today’s report should start a robust public dialogue
about what we as a community can do and must do for all children in
Denver to receive a truly quality education.
